Teradek Colr and Livegrade

I have now been using the Teradek COLR on every job I do for about 5 months. It is difficult to think back to a time when I was working without these in my kit.

Depending on the requirements and restrictions of the job I will either have the units mounted on camera or leave them built into my cart. There are different reasons why I will choose one or the other setup, they both have their own pros and cons.

The benefits of having the COLR on camera is that when the DOP is also operating this provides a lightweight and fairly simple way to show him/her the look at the camera, with zero delay.
When running multiple units directly on cameras, I have found that the necessary infrastructure to support the workflow becomes rather large and time-consuming to manage. This is fine when the time allows for it and you have the manpower to sustain it, however on the average commercial with multiple location changes in a day, its just too cumbersome.

Having the units built on my cart is really an amazing way to work. This allows me to have a more conventional Livegrade workflow with hard wired networking and bulletproof stability. This is essential when we are moving quickly and people are relying on you to be up and running as soon as the camera powers up. Keep it light, keep it easy.
